A springing POA often does not hold up where it is needed. I would suggest a durable one which will hold up. Many companies insist on being mailed a copy. If you send a springing one it could be a waste of time and thus frustration.

Yes, it's extremely important that we take care of these matters well in advance of actual need. When my mom was referred to a pain clinic (she was 85), I took her to our family attorney and had the important documents drawn up - durable POA, health care POA and advance directive - as I knew that she would be placed on opioids and I wanted to make sure that all of her decisions were made with a clear head. It turned out to be the smartest move I ever made.

I would also add that it's good to make sure that all bank statements and receipts are carefully maintained for at least your state's look-back period (in my case, it was five years' worth) . This comes in quite handy should the need for Medicaid arise at some point in the future.
