My 89 year old mother who was diagnosed with dementia 3 years ago was very agitated in the evening and went to bed angry at me. During the night she began yelling in her sleep. It sounded like she was arguing with someone. It was very loud - it even startled my dogs and they began barking. I did not wake her up because I was afraid she would be disoriented and combative. She stopped after about 5 minutes. Should I wake her if this happens again?

Thank you - I felt it was right to not awaken her but then questioned myself after my sister criticized me. That's probably another subject for discussion!

No, you should not awaken her. It is kind of like a sleeping baby, you don't wake them up either, unless very necessary. If it was only 5 minutes then not too bad. If they are sleeping, then they are not yelling at you or causing any disturbances.
