My mom shocked me by agreeing to wear a life alert pendant of some sort while at her cottage, as long as it "didn't look obvious"... but I'm having a hard time figuring out what would be the best kind. Does anyone have experience with this?

A subscription service fee is okay, as I imagine it would be needed for a good one. I want something that has an emergency button in case of a health emergency in which 911 would be called and also other phone numbers (myself and my brother and her close friend who lives down the street), along with a GPS for locating.

Any recommendations or advice would be welcome.

Thanks for the suggestions. I spent a lot of time researching yesterday and am thinking about this one:

https://livelifealarms.com/

It's much pricier up front for the equipment, like close to $450. but after that there is no monthly fee. Just a $9. fee every three months to keep the talk minutes active and updated.

I like it because it is not dependent on a land line or cell phone. My mom doesn't have a landline in either of her places and sometimes forgets her cell. Plus if she is out of range from her cell most won't work. This one has it's own sim card and connects to all cell towers on it's own, and you can even speak through it. I could call the device with my cell phone and talk to her.

You program in 5 numbers (including 911) and if she pushes the button or a fall is detected then all the numbers are notified and accurate GPS location is revealed by text on Google maps so I would know exactly where she is, as would 911. edit- just found out 911 doesn't get the GPS text. Darn :(

What do you guys think? It doesn't connect to a call center, which is why there is no monthly fee. But I'm thinking you don't need a call center when 911 is called.

Also it seems small enough that if I got her a long necklace to wear it she could be discreet and then she will actually wear it which is the main thing.

If I were going to do this, I would look at a monitored home alarm system that can have an alert pendant added onto it. Like this: https://www.alarm.com/productservices/wellness.aspx

That way you can see all the activity in the house -- or if there is NO activity, when there should be.

Thank you. We're not ready for something that comprehensive yet. I live next to my mom and see her every day. She's also going to be away for a month or two at a cottage she owns and she will have daily check ins there too with friends and my brother will be there every weekend.

I'm looking for something mobile that she can wear when out or even inside in case of an emergency.

Check into Greatcall.com. I used this for my dad and they were always very responsive and because of the GPS could locate him when we was away from home. They have large button, easy to use cell phones with an emergency button and also have a smaller device with just an alert button. My dad never actually had an emergency but did use it a few times when he couldn't dial my phone number (He's blind and sometimes can't get the buttons right to dial the phone.) They were always responsive and polite. They had all his medical info on file and emergency contact info so in an emergency they could clue in the responders.

Thanks I looked at their website and their mobile device isn't available yet, it says it's "coming soon", but the service did look impressive. I have it bookmarked!

We did not have good luck with the one from Humana insurance. Three of them did not work. Gave up on them.

My dad has had medical alert for many years. He has used it for several falls. The problem is getting him to understand that it is for emergencies only, not when he wants me to come do something for him.

I just got medical guardian for my grandfather. I first read about it here and it seems to have great reviews.
