My father lives in Ellesmere Port and I live in London Ontario Canada. I'm an only child and my mother passed away in 2014. My dad has been in and out of hospital with blood pressure and blood sugar issues. The neighbours have been kind enough to help with groceries and house cleaning. He refuses help or assistance with care and now that his water heater has gone so no hot water for showering or laundry can be done. He refuses help so my question is what can I do to get this all sorted out, if it requires legal means I have the full support of his brothers and sister. If anyone has any suggestions please feel free to give your input.

Thank you in advance

RBobbie, what country does dad live in?

Is the US, every county has an Area Agency on Aging. You can call them and get information about services that are available, how to arrange help and how to get welfare/wellness checks. Certainly worth a shot!

I can say that in the US the laws are that if a person is of sound mind they are free to make their own decisions, even bad ones. And the bar for competence is pretty low. Many here wait for a crisis to force an elder into changing their living situation. As nice as the neighbors are in helping they are fostering an illusion of independence in your father. We have Canadian members here so they should be along with advice to help. Hopefully you can do more than wait for crisis, it’s very hard
