Are there any LEGAL reasons to change my mother’s address since she moved to AL? She lived with me in my home and I would like to keep getting her mail here. That way I can keep an eye on things. She is 98 and sometimes misplaces things. I tried calling her attorney to ask the question and just found out he retired 2 years ago! We were never notified. Thank goodness I have all the original copies of her will, POAs, etc.

Anyway, was wondering if I need to change her address with SS, banks, pension and the like. With tax season approaching, I don’t want to change her address, so I can be sure I will receive all her tax documents.

I never changed my mom's address from her house to her nursing home, and she didn't even live in the same county as her house.

Justsotired, no, there is no legal reason that you need to change your Mom's address from your house over to the Assisted Living address.

My Dad's mailing address was my home even though he never lived with me. I was Dad's Power of Attorney. Therefore, I got all of Dad's bills, bank statements, paperwork from his CPA, Attorney, doctors, etc.

I did have a tussle with the Assisted Living hand delivering the monthly bill to Dad, as I wanted it sent directly to my home only with no copy given to Dad. I explained to them that Dad would see the bill and quickly want to move to some place cheaper.

When Dad did move to Assisted Living, I did make up a cartoon-like change of address with his Assisted Living address which I sent to his relatives and friends. That way they could mail Dad cards or what not to his Assisted Living.

I changed my moms address to my home when I moved her to my state . Simplifies everything. When she was in another state I was forever trying to get her to send the tax documents I needed, that she would misplace. I used her name first, then C/O my name underneath hers.

I'm not sure about legal reasons, but it's not at all uncommon for people to have a mailing address that's different than their physical address. My husband was POA for his brother who is in a nursing home, and had all the brother's "official" mail come to our address, e.g., bank and pension statments, social security statements, medical bills, etc. To make it clear he wasn't living here, we had the address read as: XXXX, c/o YYYYY, and then our address. Some personal mail, e.g., publication subscriptions, are sent to the nursing home address, and friends and family send letters and cards to the nursing home address.
