My mother is in an assisted living facility, her SS and a small pension helps cover her expenses but not enough. I have been paying the remainder of the cost. Can I claim my payment amount to the facility to cover the balance on my taxes without claiming her as a dependent? She reached the $3700 limit this year becauae she received monies from a remaining IRA and a small amount from my deceased fathers' pension. The IRA is gone and pension amount is only $187, That plus SS is all. I understand SS may or may not be taxable. Can the portion I pay to keep her there be claimed on my taxes. Help someone please! I can't afford to stop working, my wife is disable.
for us. She said that we had to provide at least 50% of her support. You might could take it as medical expenses on your taxes, but then again there is only a percentage you can take. Ask whoever does your taxes, they can look it up.
