To date, research on the health effects of D-mannose is very limited. However, there's some evidence that D-mannose shows promise for protection against urinary tract infections.
In a laboratory study published in the journal PLoS One in 2008, for instance, scientists demonstrated that D-mannose can help stop Escherichia coli (the type of bacteria that causes the vast majority of urinary tract infections) from sticking to cells found in the urinary tract. Although the study's authors suggest that D-mannose may help prevent urinary tract infections, it should be noted that there is currently a lack of clinical trials testing the use of D-mannose supplements against urinary tract infections (or any other health condition).
My 88 yr old mother was getting 3 UTI's a year. A urogynecologist was subscribed to her and he put her on Estrace to be inserted vaginally. The problem is,,,when you age,,,you no longer have the good bacteria in your vagina to kill the bad ones…the anus is close to the vagina and w/o the good bacteria, the bad bacteria wins…that is why she gets a lot of ecoli in her urine tests. If she has the good bacteria that can fight this off,,,she won’t have all these uti’s. options are to take a daily antibiotic,,,or vaginal estrogen cream daily. We and he opted for the vaginal estrogen cream. But I do supplement her with RAW (brand) probiotics.
Several years ago my wife was having UTI problems every few weeks. Depending on the type of bacteria colonies affecting her bladder and urinary tract, antibiotics varied and nothing was prescribed until the bacteria colonies were identified which took several days. After a lot of observation and research the key to lowering the incidences of future UTIs was to prevent the bad bacteria colonies from clinging to the bladder wall and causing infection. Since taking d-mannose powder ( one teaspoon) in the morning at breakfast and Cystex (a cranberry concentrate, one teaspoon in the evening) she has not had UTI (knock on wood). Drinking water, juices, etc throughout the day is a must. Hope this helps.
Hi Nurse. It's a shame and seems very illogical that the medical profession knows so little about the function and natural processes of the human body, which would include natural (usually low cost and very effective, non-invasive and healing) methods. Probiotics replace all that is wiped out by the drugs and anti-biotics. If Anti-biotics were truly effective then we wouldn't have the "super bugs" today.
Timing and quality of taking probiotics is very important to ASSIST the body to fight off bad bacteria. Think of the cause and not the symptom!
The reason why many don't know about homeopathic, herbal, and food cures is because drug companies, big Agriculture, corporations, and insurance companies cannot profit from it. Very much like solar and sustainable energy. Very much why you know Tom Edison but not Nicholas Tesla.
This is a new one on me & I am an R.N. , most into any natural way to deal with problems. I have no 1 st hand experience on this but it sounds good to me & I would do more look up more on it before I used it. There is so much out there that I just don't know. May I add that I have been in practice fore over 40 some years now too. Always something new to learn. I thank you & wish you the best.
Please supplement with a quality Probiotic or you'll have a lot more more troubles from an impaired immune system, since anti-biotics wipe out your best defenders in other areas as well as the few invaders. Look up probiotics or go to a health store: your local health store to get the best kind.
I had some positive experience with D-Mannose protecting against UTI's. It definitely did not cure one as I did not use the strong dosage to try and do that. I had to request a Bactrim for my wife as a UTI knocks the daylights out of her. But since starting a regular dosage of D-Mannose and thence a antibiotic, thanks God not UTI since then
