Mom is currently in a private pay facility but will need to move to a Medicaid facility in the near future. Would like comments from people regarding New Jersey Medicaid and/or South Carolina Medicaid and placement in such facilities.

Whatever state you choose, you will need to make her a legal resident of the state.
Medicaid is adminstered by each state, under an overall federal guideline. So similar yet different. The state system is set up to provide for their residents first and foremost and you will have to show an ID with a state address for the application.

If mom has car or house, this will be sticky and a decision will have to be make as to whether to keep the house & car and stay in the state they are located. OR sell them to move to the other state and then use the proceeds from the sale as a part of her spend down. Property - like a home or care - are exempt assets for Medicaid but only if you are a resident of the same state in which the property is. Understand? Good luck.
