I have worked in facilities with residents that refuse Incontinence Care, Along with Parineal Care. They have every right to do so correct? Because I currently have a boss telling me they have no right to refuse this, that we have to ask but if they refuse; we still have to do incontinence care. I am still fairly new to being a caregiver but I have had some bad bosses already trying to get me to do illegal things and that just is not going to happen. I try to stay informed on all my scope to practice and all rights that the residents have. Including their right to refuse. Any advice/tips/answers are greatly appreciated. Thank you!!

People who are not in control of their faculties need care. That is why they are there. For your care. People can die of infections when allowed to remain in urine and feces. When a person is not in control of their faculties others must take on POA (power of attorney) over them and provide them care or they could, in fact, die. I would suggest that anyone requiring cleaning but refusing it have at least two staff members present as care is rendered to them.

With my mom, we found that saying "now it's time for..." rather than "would you like to..." made all the difference in the world.

From a family perspective I would expect that a facility has the expertise to get the job done, either through gentle persuasion or taking steps like working with a doctor to appropriately medicate those who are combative. You can't leave someone who isn't mentally competent to just sit in their own waste, and you can't allow that person to spread that waste throughout their rooms or the rest of the facility, that's a health hazard not only for them but for everyone else too.
