How do you communicate with your loved one in nursing home when you cannot be there? I would like to be able to see and talk with my mom who has dementia since I cannot go inside. I haven't seen her in a couple of weeks due to having a cold and I'm the only one she recognizes.


What is the cheapest way to do video chat and easiest way since mom has dementia? I know the caregivers can figure it out to help her, but I would like it to be easy and cost effective:) Please mention devices used and needed to get started. Thank you for any help with any ideas you have tried or thought of!

The nursing home has purchased several iPads to do FaceTime calls. We sign up for a specific time and they call us then. It has been a relief and a joy to be able to see my mother’s face! Since there are so many others to sign up, I get a call about every other day. We also go to the nursing home and call the front desk to ask them to open her blinds and position her in front of the window, then they give her one of the center’s portable phones and we talk through the window. Also, the director has started a daily newsletter to keep us up to date on everything that they are doing during this time. That’s a comfort too!

That is lovely that her facility is making sure that she is being cared for in ALL ways.

Right now knowing their lived ones are okay is so important for their wellbeing. The ones that are cognizant anyway.
