Yes, you should look into hospice. My Dad also had Parkinson's disease and we had a similar experience with him this summer. He broke his hip late April and spent most of the summer between the hospital and the rehab facility. Like your Dad, his condition steadily deteriorated with him refusing to even eat his favorite sweet in the end. We brought him home from the rehab facility with the hope that he would get better, but he died 5 days later. All I can say is make him as comfortable as possible and cherish these moments with him.

Sunny, at some point he will refuse food completely, and Hospice will guide you what to look for, how to medicate pain and/delirium. I would not say he is dying if he is still taking in food. At the six month point, soon, Hospice will re-certify his status. Just keep him comfortable and play his favorite music for him.

If he is not on hospice care, it is time to ask for a hospice evaluation. If he is on Hospice, the best person to address this question to is the hospice nurse. They have a lot of experience with the dying process, but they do not have crystal balls! They can give you a pretty realistic expectation of what to expect, but not an exact prediction.

I am sorry that your dad is at this point in his disease. For people of his generation, 89 is a good old age. I hope he's had a good life. Love him to the end.

Your question is not clear. Are you asking if it's time for hospice care, or is he in hospice care currently?

I think that Hospice means the patient has a life expectancy of less than 6 months, but that is not certain. Some people live much longer and some even are removed from Hospice. His behavior does seem like he is declining.

I don't know much about Parkinson's. I bet someone who does will respond to this.
