How to deal with lost money to a scam?

This question has been closed for answers. Ask a New Question.
Unless they were local scammers there really isn’t much you can do. My mom lost thousands of dollars after falling for that ridiculous scam were “Microsoft” calls and says they dected a virus on your computer and for a fee they will remove it. They make you install remote access on your computer as well and every few months they call and say you’ve got a virus again and they want more money to fix it. Well my mom fell for this (sorry to say she lacks common sense, it’s not just old age). She’s kind of addicted to the computer. Anyway even though it’s a known scam, her credit card company refused to reverse any of the charges since she agreed to pay the scammers! My brother kept trying to tell her it was a scam. Several thousand dollars later, she finally realized it herself.

Unfortunately when money is lost through a scam, the chances of getting the money back is "Nil" or "None". If the scam was done by someone who lives in the area, then you can contact the police and maybe they can do something. If the scam involved sending money via the mail or a wire transfer, then the money is gone for good and you will most likely not be able to get it back. Sorry.

You still need to contact the police and tell them about the scam even if it was done via the telephone or through an email. That way the authorities are alerted and can be on the lookout for similar scams. Sometimes, the police will have a story about the scam on the local radio and TV stations. The best way to not lose money to a scam, is to "Just Say No" and hang up or delete the email.

What was the scam? People here need more specifics. They can be very helpful but you can't be so general with your topic.
