My mom lives in a memory care facility. On 7/11 while getting up early morning hours to use the bathroom she fell on her face resulting in a hard blow to her forehead, fractured a rib and concussion. Mom has vascular dementia so it's been a slow recovery mentally. I see changes in her dementia, not too bad but she's different. Dr ordered a bed alarm so caregivers could get to her before another fall, HOWEVER, this past Wednesday, caregivers neglected to set her alarm and she fell hitting the back of her head. It's been 4 days since her fall and her demeanor has changed. Terribly frightened because now she has no idea where she is and didn't know who I was yesterday. She's gone from a rather independent woman to a terrified woman. I'm so concerned she has changed forever. Will she come out of this or is this my new mom?
I'm so sorry you and your mom are going through this. It must be very difficult to see your mom like this and for her to not recognize you. If she continues to not recognize you then you can be the lady who represents comfort and security to your mom when you visit. Hopefully your mom can begin to associate you with positive emotions.
Some facilities lower the bed, or place cushions around the bed. This might be worth a try.
