Mom lives on her own and loves it but we worry that she should not be alone in her home. We want to have her move to a apartment or some place where there are others to help if she needs it, but also allows her freedom to come and go when she wants.

MJHICKS,

Welcome to the world of caregiving. Many caregivers like you have difficulties talking their parents into moving to a senior living facility. Some parents don't want to leave their home and some have visions from the '70s of what nursing homes used to be like. Hopefully our site will provide great insight for you in this upcoming process. I have included 2 articles that might help you now. Best of luck!

Yes she has a medical alert system! No she does not need help showering! She can still cook her own foods! Mom's age is 84! She has been having signs of dementia for over 1-year now, but so far she still can do well on her own, but with this dementia we just worry she is maybe not taking her med's correctly and eating healthy dinners. We know she gets upset when anyone ask her about moving, but before she is forced to move we would much rather have her agree to this. I am asking for helpful list of questions we can ask her to help her consider moving into a elderly living facility.

Ah. I see on your profile that your mother has dementia. That is a different kettle of fish altogether. How severe is the dementia at this point?

What specifically are you worried about in her home? Perhaps there would be ways to reduce the risks right where she is.

Does she have a medical alert system?

Does she need help with showering?

Can she still cook safely or does she need help with meals?

What is Mom's age and her impairments? What makes you think that she should not be alone in her home?
