Mom is broken hearted because the assisted living facility asked me to remove her dog because mom's worsening dementia is preventing her from taking care of him any longer and he nips at those who get too close to him. She is devastated and when I bring him over she cries. I feel so bad how do I deal with this? I was going over a couple times a day to care for him but it's too much for me.
Try not taking the dog over to see your mom next time. I know your heart is in the right place but it sounds like seeing the dog upsets her.
This is yet another example of how cruel a disease dementia is. You can't run over to your mom's back and forth several times a day to take care of a dog, that's unrealistic. Giving the dog another home was the best choice to make. And it is sad but you did what you had to do. Your mom went into AL because she was unable to care for herself in her home. She certainly can't care for a dog if she can't care for herself. Are you taking care of the dog now?
