Hi. I need advice. Mom lives in an independent living facility and is 92. She broke her hip but has done well in rehab. She is scheduled to be discharged in 3 days. The day of her discharge, in the morning, of course, she must be at the hospital across the street from rehab to have her catheter for dialysis replaced. Then she goes to dialysis that night. I want to have her stay at rehab extended 1-2 days so this is stabilized and not rushed, but her rehab has insisted on the term date? Any ideas on how to extend for a day and coverd?

She actually did pretty well, and originally I wanted it extended for another 2 days because I am concerned about her arm strength and she hasnt put on a shoe since she began. But then the surgery came up. The Rehab and Hospital work independently. Perfect storm this one. There was no wiggle room according to therapist. Got discharge notice.

Interesting hospital and rehab did not work on this before discharge day?

I know.. hospital was only surgery, and rehab only rehab. They both stated they could only address the issues they had been responsible for. I am ultimately having mom discharged the same date from rehab as her medical procedure. Initially I was going to call her PCP who could have probably helped, but we are going with this plan.

When I needed my mother's rehab extended for a couple of days, I paid for it privately. There was no medical reason for it TO be extended, so I didn't even ask Medicare to pay for it. I took the money from mom's account as her financial POA.

Best of luck getting the social worker to help you get the extra day paid for by M/C.

Speak to social services now. This isn't easy but it CAN be done. In my own case it was followup MRIs for my brother. And the fact I was coming from SanFran to be with him in PalmSprings and didn't drive, wouldn't have wheels. When I spoke to Social Services she contacted the doc and they got him another week. They kind of confabulated, if I am honest, that his wound from his accident needed wound care. Medicare approved it. A good Social Worker who is responsive can work wonders, and why I always tell folks to treat them like your best friend. In these instances they may be.

Medicare has very rigid standards about rehab coverage.

Have you gotten the discharge notice? You can appeal it, but talk to the therapists first about whether they have any wiggle room.

Is mom being discharged because she is no longer making progress?
