My Father is a resident in an Independent Living facility that is called an independent plus facility. The facility does not provide additional care but has several people who have companies to provide extra care that you can contract with. The facility is poorly managed and theee are many safety and health issues. Periodical non working fire alarms, water pump shutdowns so no showers or water for several days, yesterday there was no one to cook meals so they ordered pizzas for dinner. Last week pizza was delivered at 9 pm because the only dinner served was sandwiches which the residents complained about after several evenings of sandwiches for dinner. A glass elevator with a huge crack in the glass, rooms not cleaned on a regular basis. Inadequate staff - asst.manager, marketing person quit. No staff at entrance. Recents thefts from residents where management reminded residents to lock their doors. I could on and on. Because it’s not an Assisted Living facility there is no licensure or oversight. Any ideas?

The real question is, why is your father still living there? I would have him out there so fast, my head would spin.

Water issues are an inhabitability violation of any rental agreement, and your father would be entirely within his rights to break the lease and move out.

The water is a health concern so right there I would call the health dept and even the code office in that township concerning non-working alarms. There should be fire extinguishers that have been inspected and in the green.

I would think any facility claiming they care for Seniors/elderly have to be licensed in some way by the State. If they except any government funding, like Medicaid, they answer to the State.

With this level of issues going on, I think I'd move dad out of there if I were in your shoes. While you can complain and maybe expect to get one or two issues resolved, I don't think it's realistic to expect ALL these terrible issues to get resolved. You have a management that doesn't care about the welfare of their residents, which is obvious by chronic sandwiches for dinner and a lack of water for showers for SEVERAL DAYS. Totally unacceptable, in my opinion. I'd rather move dad out and suffer that aggravation ONCE than deal with this ongoing 3 ring circus on a continual basis.

Good luck.

Some of the issues you mentioned can be reported to Local agencies.
Health Department. If there are issues with water then the Kitchen can not operate within code.
Sprinkle system would be Fire code violation.
some of the other issues are probably under State Code but Local departments must follow State codes if they are more strict than local ones.
I would contact the Building Department of your local City or County.
I would also begin to look for another IL facility

It is true that ALF and ILF are not regulated. They are basically rental contracts and they are basically complain to the managers, and if you aren't happy you need to search for another facility. I have a friend who recently fell because of faulty sprinkler systems and sustained hematoma with headaches requiring a whole lot of followup. This area had been complained about many times. Makes one feel a bit helpless, and guess the truth is that we ARE a bit helpless out her in the brave new world. So few seem to care.
