My husband is in late stage 6 with Alzheimer's. I have been good for 9 years taking care of him, but suddenly I feel like I have nothing to look forward to. I feel like there is a black cloud over my head and I can't shake the feeling. I remembered that my daughter invited me to go to the shore with them when they go in August. I would really love to go with them but can't take my husband. He is way too much work to enjoy a vacation. It would do no good at all just to get away with him. I am exhausted and need at least a week of respite care. How do I go about finding someone who is qualified to take care of him who would come to my home for the week. I think he would be more comfortable here than somewhere else. At least he is familiar with his home and feels safe here.
Does the VA take a person for a week of respite care?

Find Care & Housing
I have applied for Aid and attendance. I applied back in April! They said it may take a year to get an answer! He still understands that this is his house and I am his person who watches out for him. I don't think he is quite ready for placement yet. Plus I would feel so guilty if I left him. Even for the week will make me feel guilty! He is not mean or anything. Just not much mind left these days.

Do you have Aid answer Attendence through the VA? Can you be in touch with them about respite?

I'm going to suggest this as gently as is possible. Is it perhaps time for you to seek placement? Two of my Aunts predeceased their brave WWII vet husbands, they just couldn't bear being separated from them. Both to the detriment of their health. Please make good choices about your dear husband's care. And check in here, we care!
