Keep it short and sweet. And yes, probably fib a little, for both your sakes.

When is he going?

So sorry you had to make this decision. My DH and I have talked about this. I told him I will not promise anything. I will care for him for as long as I can physically but I can't promise I won't place him. He is 200lbs and 10 in taller than 5ft tall 135lb me.

I told my Mom we were taking her to a nice apt where she would make new friends. Like said, may be time for a fib. And as said, let him get used to the place and relying on others. They may ask that you don't visit for a few days. I understand why but IMO it leaves the person feeling like they have been abandoned. If I visited it would just be to check on him for my peace of mind. But only for a short time.

cgreiff, time to bring out the "therapeutic fibs". He may or may not understand, but you can try saying he's going into rehab until he feels better.

If possible, see if you can set up his room similar to what he has at home. Such as moving the bed in relationship to the windows. Bring along his bedspread, night table, bed lamp, etc.

I know it helped my Dad if he awaken in the middle of the night, to see the furniture in the same order at his bedroom back at home.

It may take months until he feels comfortable at his new location. Give him time to learn his way around, to recognize the Staff, and get use to the meals.
