My husband always shops at Whole Foods. We like our local Whole Foods store a lot. Every employee wears masks and gloves, along with shields at the register. Tape marks off the appropriate distance between customers.

There are a few products that we buy at locally owned stores. One store disappointed us during this health crisis.

My husband was shocked that absolutely none of the employees at this store had on masks or gloves. Only one other customer besides my husband was wearing a mask and gloves.

My husband sent an email to the store saying that we were loyal customers and wished to continue being future customers.

My husband explained in his email that he was uncomfortable that none of the employees were protected, nor were they protecting others by having bare faces and hands.

So, in a couple of days he received a phone call from the manager in response to the email saying that since it wasn’t a corporate policy that the employees were free to do as they pleased.

My husband replied by saying, “Don’t you feel that it should be a policy since Louisiana’s governor has asked all of us to wear masks in public?”

The store manager said in a cavalier attitude he wasn’t all that concerned. When my husband politely told him that we would be doing all of our shopping at Whole Foods because they chose to follow our governor’s regulations, the manager acted as if he did not care about losing customers.

Has anyone else seen cavalier attitudes among certain stores or businesses in your area?

Yes, here in WI and elsewhere in areas where Trump supporters are common, there is an attitude that "freedom" to do whatever they please is paramount to any public health emergency. These people feel that the COVID-19 epidemic is made up, overblown, only affects city people, and myriad other illogical and erroneous ideas. Many small business owners are among this group, including some in my own family. During the "stay at home" orders, I've seen Facebook pictures of large groups gathering, people who think they are immune to the infection possibility. If you have not been out much, this is wider spread than you might realize. And I don't expect our local police to infect themselves giving out tickets or enforcing.

SO...if you are among the better educated who appreciate how easy this infection spreads, if you know someone who's been infected (I do, my young niece,) and know how serious the infection is, how it can reduce your lung function and damage your organs permanently (anyone for dialysis?), you know that you must protect yourself as you have been doing. And avoiding going out as much as you can. For several more months in all likelihood. And don't spend your discretionary consumer dollars with businesses that don't think they have an obligation to help lower the curve by taking reasonable precautions. Spending money with businesses like that is rewarding their irresponsibility.

Where I live I am almost the only person wearing a mask and gloves. People look at me like why are you doing that. We have only one case in our county. It is because no one is being tested. They are not being tested because we are a tourist destination. We need the tourist dollars. So we keep it down. I am one of the very few sheltering in place in my town. This is in the USA. If the tourist sees that we don't have very many cases then they come here. Our little hospital has only three ventilators. Some idiots think it is all a hoax. The little baptist church I go to is about to open up without social distancing and no masks. I will not be there.

Looks like the virus might be starting to heat up in rural areas. Some governors are smart enough to put regs in place before the explosions and learn the lessons of Italy, Spain and NYC. The results remain to be seen, of course.

Good luck all. NY appears to be starting to flatten the exponential level of infection.

Laboring, asymptomatic women in NYC are being tested at admission; at one reporting hospital, 14% are COVID positive. A friend at another hospital tells me their rate is 27%.

That's the rate of infection among folks with no symptoms. I'm not pressing anyone to open ANYTHING. We are still in very dangerous territory.

We actually had a man arrested for making a threat on facebook to do a mass shooting at one of our grocery stores this week. He was upset that so many people are out in public not wearing masks....in Florida that is a 2nd degree felony, so he is looking at serious time in prison. I get aggravated too, especially when i see used gloves and masks thrown on the ground, people coughing and sneezing without a mask on and most of us stay home except the necessary meds and grocery trips every 2-3 weeks. I am making lots of masks for the people in our apt bldg, mainly elders with health issues. Gives me something to do since i cant go to pool for exercise.
i hope everyone is safe and we will come out of this pandemic better and stronger as a nation. Blessings to all..,Liz

Oh my gosh, making threats on others scares me. It really does. People go off the rails and snap.

I am glad that threats are taken seriously. They need to be.

Returning blessings to you. 💗

Hi
I am from the UK. Our prime minister was extremely ill and in hospital with the virus but he turned the corner after being in the icu. His attitude is very sober now as he is about to be a father. We are in lockdown now and it will last a while. I hope all of you in the States stay well with your loved ones

Thank you so much for your warm wishes. I certainly wish all of the UK to recover as soon as possible. Everyone is facing challenges these days.

It’s difficult to be on lockdown. I am sorry. Safety must come first. Please keep us posted on your situation.

I have always noticed that many public figures in all walks of life are not nearly as concerned about YOUR EXPERIENCE until it also becomes THEIR EXPERIENCE.

I would rather see someone wear a home made mask than an improperly fitted N95. People forget they need to be "fit tested" for them,, they are not one size fits all! Gloves seem silly to me as people touch everything and its brother with them on,, and don't "purell"them after touching. We even "purell" them at the hospital ( yes indeed we are wearing them all the time, between patients) And I do find it funny to pass a car with a single driver alone in there, with a mask on..?

The healthcare and frontline people should have all the professional masks. We can make do with the home masks for our quick grocery errands. Yes, what good are improper fitting masks?

Seeing a single person drive with a mask is kind of funny. My husband doesn’t put his mask on while driving by himself. He puts it on just before he opens his door.

Do you all have enough masks at your hospital? I hope you do. Stay safe, Pam.

What I have noticed is before the mandatory face covering in public went into effect, almost everyone maintained distance. The more masks you see people wearing, the closer that distance between people seems to become. I think the masks and gloves give people a false sense of security, even though time and again we've been told that they won't prevent you from getting the illness, they might keep you from passing it on if you're infected.
But honestly, the CDC can't seem to say for sure if masks will prevent you from spreading it if you're contagious. And now I wonder how many confirmed people with it are breaking quarantine, figuring "well, since everyone is wearing masks, it's safe for me to go out." And if the wolf is at the door financially, I can see that thinking becoming even more prevalent, if the choice is illness or starvation/homelessness.
Not an easy situation any way you look at it.

This is true. Nothing about this situation is easy.

With masks and distance, the chance of contracting the virus is cut down substantially. So, then the choices become:

Stay home: no job, no money, then homelessness and starvation, 100% sure

or

Go to work with protections: less than 1% chance of getting sick, and if sick, 98% chance recovery. Those "essential" workers are making this very choice.

Why can't everyone else? Why?

Because people are not taking it seriously? Wearing their masks incorrectly? Won’t do what’s necessary to prevent the spread? The health care teams (nurses, doctors, medical rooms and equipment) are of limited supplies?

I get a terrible headache every time I think of my future (bleak).

The level of ignorance that I have observed with this pandemic is astounding. It's scary that adults live in this country and walk around daily while appearing to be normal. Then, something happens and we get to see just how pathetic these people are. Thank goodness for the awesome, smart, brave, devoted citizens that have risen to the challenge to be heroes, but, the losers standout nonetheless. I'm not sure how you fight that level of stupid. (I'm referring to citizens who live in shelter at home jurisdictions, who throw parties where 50 of their best friends attend and then they REFUSE to disburse when police arrive and then after being forced to disburse, continuing to return throughout the night, so that police must stand vigil at the party house to keep visitors from returning. Or parting on the beaches, hugging, kissing, hanging all over each other, as if there is no pandemic.)

I think anyone who works in a service industry already knew how ignorant and crazy - and yes, downright stupid - people can be, I've heard some unbelievable stories and that was before covid 19.
