Find Care & Housing
Just a thought here. Seems this OP is working under the table meaning her employer is not making payroll deductions. No federal or State income taxes or SS/Medicare are being deducted. So no quarters for SS. A 1099 means the person is responsible for paying Income taxes and sending the proper amount of money to SS so they get credit for working. 1099s are usually used for sub-contractors and interest on bank accounts and stocks and investments. Payroll requires a W2 that shows all deductions for the year.

If you do not file, then you do not get credit for your Social security. You need 10 years or 40 work credits. Even if you earn below poverty level, you should file.
One thing we always tell people who hire privately is to hand the 1099.

Tax evasion is a federal crime. With 80k extra IRS agents on the job, do as you wish.

Yes, you have to file and pay taxes. If -- when -- this IRS catches this, you'll have to pay both the back taxes and penalties.

ShirleyDot is correct.

The PoA may need to file the 1099 so that they can prove that the funds went for caregiving. If/when the carereceiver ever applies for Medicaid, unexplained payments may be viewed as gifting, which could delay/disqualify them from this important financial aid.

The PoA should have made this clear when they hired you. You, in the future, need to be sure to ask before accepting a job. You should be doing your own withholding so that you are contributing to your own SS and Medicare, which you will need when you are retired.

You’ve been working illegally and they have been paying you illegally. Start paying taxes.

They will need your SS# in order to file a 1099 with the IRS. If you don’t give it to them, they can’t do it. If you don’t give it to them (or they already have it somehow) and you receive a 1099, you will have to file because the income will have been reported.

You were offered a job with a salary? Either hourly or weekly?
Then yes, you will need to file that as earnings. He will supply you, as he should, with the 1099 and you will file the income you earned as income.
HE will be filing his portion with the IRS. And he will say who he has paid.
The IRS will be expecting YOUR portion as well, as you having earned that, and the amount of taxes you will pay on your earnings.
That simple.
