My husband and I saw one of our friends at Walmart at few weeks ago. He stated that he had just got back from seeing his doctor and was told he had "dementia". At this point, he appeared to worry about something and told my husband and I that he felt like he was going crazy. From then on, he was no longer able to live alone or care for himself. He has recently been hospitalized twice. The first time in the hospital he was told he had "dementia and kidney infection", This past week he got sick and was once again hospitalized, where he was only told "dementia". We are blown away with this. Can it really happen overnight? Confused here,

Kidney infection? Because urinary tract infection can go to the kidney and become a pyelonephritis. Urinary tract infections are notorious for causing some very sudden dementia-like changes. That is something to check. There can also be vascular, and stroke like things that can cause profound and sudden changes. A full physical in hospital is now a necessity and hopefully that will happen.

AlvaDeer Thank you for all of this information. Yes, he spent a few nights in the hospital for them to run tests on him. Per his sister, he is the same and has not been given any other diagnoses. We just feel so bad this happened to him overnight.

Who is reporting to you why he was hospitalized? If it is your friend with dementia, you have to take his comments in light of his diagnosis.

A UTI can cause all sorts of problems for seniors, including dementia like symptoms. And it can happen overnight.
