Is someone with COPD considered immunocompromised and therefore eligible for a 4th COVID-19 shot/second booster?

I'd assume so, but when I checked the CDC guidelines for a 4th shot, they do not explicitly name the condition. However, I have seen the following on the NIH site:

"Patients with COPD are prone to recurrent respiratory infections leading to disease severity. In COPD, not only the initial response to pathogens but also the strength with which the adaptive immune system responds to such challenges is impaired (15, 52). Such weakened immune responses can lead to recurrent infections. "

Does anyone with COPD have any experience with this? My Mom is 73 and is prone to horrible chest infections b/c of her COPD - plus was "high risk" the first time around. It's just not clear in the new guidelines and I want to make sure she is getting the optimum protection if she is eligible.

Heidiann the easiest thing to do would be to call the doctor's office and ask the nurse he works with. I can't imagine you would be told anything except "yes get one" unless your mom has some unusual circumstance. Is your mom on any inhalers? They often contain steroids for copd treatment. My father received his shots without question from the pharmacist and he has very mild copd.

Anyone 50 and up is eligible for the second booster, as well as ppl under 50 who are immune compromised.

There are two issues:
1) Is mother eligible for a 4th Covid shot? I’d guess yes – I’ve already had mine, age 75, no other relevant problems. I’d guess that they are even more available where you are.
2) Are you happy with her COPD doctor? Different question altogether. I don’t think statins are relevant for COPD, I take them for cholesterol. It might be worth getting a second opinion, which could also try out a different doctor.

I have noticed that the 4th booster is not being pushed like the first one. Its not "in our face" like the first 2 shots and booster.

I was wondering if having an immunity test would be practical to see what you immunity is to COVID.

If you don’t trust your moms doctor, you need to find a new one. does she have a specialist treating her COPD?

I have asthma which may or may not be COPD, and am definitely considered in the 'high risk' group, my doctor told me at my last appointment in January. Esp since covid is a respiratory virus and my lungs are my weak spot, as your mothers are. It only stands to reason that your mom would fit into the category. However, the CDC changes their 'guidelines' like we change our underwear, so who knows? The doctor would be the one to have the last word on this matter, I would think, since the doctor is also the one to say whether we 'qualify' for 'therapeutics' doled out in batches to each state by the Feds and which we have to go online to find ourselves.

I hear you, it feels like we have been left to figure this all out! I guess what made me question was very clear on the CDC site through the first round of vaccines and now it just seems vague. I'd imagine that the same criterion would apply for the 4th dose.

You will need to speak about this with the physician of the patient. Many with COPD qualify because they take sterioids which cut down the body's ability to respond with normal immune response. Each patient is individual as his or her own fingerprint. Speak with the doctor.

Hi again Alva! :) I am hesitant to speak with Mum's NP just yet b/c I feel a slight lack of trust after what happened with Mum's dementia diagnosis. I was hoping to do some fact finding first. She doesn't take any steroids for the COPD. Only statins which she’s taken for the last 2 years.
