Hi everyone,

My mom needs some socks and I’ve had a couple of failed attempts finding ones that fit right. Her feet are around size 10 and for some brands socks are too tight and for others the socks are too loose. At this point I thought I’d consult the experts before buying more. Not looking for compression socks, but she does have ALZ and mobility issues so ease of getting them off and on is necessary.

Extra bonus for brands with colors…

Thanks! And I gotta say this is my favorite caregiving ‘problem’ by miles

I found men's diabetic socks at the Dollar Tree that I used when my dad was still alive. They are easy to put on because my dad had problems flexing his feet. I also found some nice wool blend socks for myself at Target. I bought the larger women's sizes. I wear size 10 shoes. The socks are good for cold feet.

It is a simple question, but finding what you need is as you have found less easy. Personally with a question like this one I resort to ebay and Amazon - not that I have a great love for them, but because it is the easiest way to find numerous options without visiting dozens of shops. Sports socks are always easy to get on and off, and mens socks will always allow for extra room around the upper foot to heel where in general men are larger. These days there are quite a few makes of socks who claim easy fit or to not be too elasticated, and they even come in wild psychadelic patterns if preferred. Look for large mens socks and have a read - you're bound to find something worth trying. Good luck.

I had to buy socks for mother in hospital. The men’s socks were best (mother had large feet), but they were too tight around the ‘stay-up’ top. I borrowed the salesperson’s scissors and cut the tops off. She looked stunned – did she think I was going to ask for my money back? The mutilated socks worked perfectly, and the best insulation was wearing them inside out.

I also use diabetic socks purchased on Amazon: Yomandamor 5 Pairs Women's Bamboo Quarter Breathable Diabetic Socks with Seamless Toe and Cushion Sole

I second the diabetic socks. I bought them online (Amazon, "Doctor's Choice" brand) for my husband who doesn't have diabetes but needs something that's easy to put on and off and stays up without binding or making "indents" on his legs. Men's sizes come in tan, white, black, and navy. Women's come in white, black, grey/denim, pink, and navy. They have several lengths in the women's--"no show", ankle, and crew. Men's I think is just ankle and crew.

Buy men's compression socks. They are bigger. Also, if you dust her legs with baby powder first, it helps. Make sure her legs are absolutely dry first!!

My Mom had a size 10 shoe size and we were able to find the white cuff socks [the ones we use to wear with saddle shoes in the 1950's and 60's] made by Gold Toe that fit her. Gold Toe had the regular size for me and a larger size for Mom in the women's section of Kohl's. I don't know if Kohl's still has them as it has been a few years since I last bought them.

My mom liked Gold Toe, she had long skinny feet and they were always long enough for her. They also had a woven, not sewn, seam on the toe so they didn’t rub the top of her toes.

I agree. My mom has smaller feet but I have found that she needed looser socks since her stroke and being less mobile and have found diabetic socks are good as well. I just order them on Amazon. They have a better stretch and looser fit.

I gave up on women's socks after finding that (a) there's very little consistency in size from one brand to another (b) many socks are made in China and don't seem to be even remotely consistent with American sizes, and (c) they really don't provide much warmth.   Sometimes they're too thin; sometimes the elastic is to short and they pinch me ankles or legs.

I switched to men's hunting socks; they're too big, but at least they aren't as offsized as the Chinese junk, and they keep my feet very warm.  I can't get them into my existing shoes yet b/c they're so thick, but I need new shoes anyway.

But they sure do keep my feet warm at night!

I have size 11 feet and I have found at Walmart the Hanes brand socks that are specifically made for folks with bigger feet. You just have to check the packaging as it will say for what size shoe they're for. Good luck.

You may also want to look for ones (like on Amazon) that have non-slip grip on the bottoms…

Men's socks come in larger sizes.
A Womens size 10 shoe is about the same as a Men's size 7 or 8.
I also found that if you look (I found them at Walmart) socks for Diabetics. They are usually a bit larger than the typical ones of the same size.

I bough the diabetic socks from Walmart too, they have less elastic in the leg which might make them easier to put on.

There is a company advertising that it's socks are sized, not one size fits all. Try a Google search.

I wear trouser socks. Not quite compression but have some support. Warm and they stretch. Get mine at Walmart. They do go to the knee. Mostly dark colors though.
