For 2 1/2 yrs in a more costly place, and moved into a cheaper one. My money will be gone soon, I need Medicaid help and have filled out the app. Do you know how much financial assistance Medicaid will pay? I have nowhere to go when I am indigent. My social security is $2050 mo. I live in s.w. fl. Sarasota county, I currently have 10K in checking acct. No other income. My present rent is $2,695 until March 2020. I don't even know if I am approved, how much I will still need for other expenses, but probably no more than the allowable $2,000 assets. I hope you can shed some light on my problem.. thank you!

You don’t need a lawyer to navigate the Medicaid process. Use the social worker at your AL or contact social services directly. Start the process when you are about 3 months away from having $2000 left in the bank. Florida medicaid does have an assisted living waiver and you’ve already been self paying so the Medicaid transition should be an easy process. You don’t need to waste money on a lawyer unless you have a spouse or you gave away large sums of money.

You need to contact an elder attorney to help with your Medicaid application. $2000 in SS is right on the line for eligibility for Medicaid and your bank account is over the asset limit. You are not considered indigent. But a lawyer may be able to assist you to get on Medicaid.

I would suggest you call your Office of Aging and see if they can help you negotiate Medicaid.

In my state, to receive Medicaid to live in an AL, you must pay at least two years private pay to an AL facility. You can then apply to Medicaid for help to stay in that AL IF medicaid is excepted. IF Medicaid is excepted, there are probably only a % of residents they allow on Medicaid. If that quota has been met, the resident has to find another place.

You transferring to another AL maybe a problem. If ur AL has a SW, then talk to him/her. If not, talk to the Administrator. But I think Office of the Aging maybe who u need to talk to. I am sure there are laws where you need a safe place to go so the AL cannot evict you.

You may need to follow up on that Medicaid application. You also need to find out if the AL you r living in will allow you to use Medicaid. Like said, you need to spend down that 10k. There is criteria that has to be met before you can qualify.

Bonnie, you won't be approved for Medicaid until your checking account is almost empty. I don't know the amount they require in Florida, but it is probably less than $2000. Do you need skilled nursing? Has the social worker at your assisted living facility advised you at all? When your savings are depleted then you can get qualified for Medicaid where they will pay for the Nursing home. Almost all of your SS check will go there as well. If the facility you are in now does not accept Medicaid you will need to find a facility that does, hopefully the people there can assist you with that.
