My uncle has Alzheimers and was incarcerated for a crime. During that time, his ssi payments stopped. He has been out and free for a yr. He is now in the nursing home on medicaid. After realizing that his payments should have been resumed. I have since applied and as his payee started receving his benefits. Do I have to report this to the nursing home and will I have to pay for the previous months that he has been there.

What they will do may depend on the state where you live. Where I am, they took medicare for 20 days and then had to reevaluate her. Mom's SS was only $430 a month. The home took $400. My sister and I payed for her personal needs and the rent on a wheel chair. If I remember right, she could only have $1000 in savings and no house or land. They said she made too much for Medicaid.

Depending on the amount of your mother's Social Security benefit and her other resources such as bank accounts she will more than likely qualify for Medicaid. Contact your local Social Service agency they will be able to assist with completing the application

Call your hospital and ask for the social worker. Find out how you begin the process for applying for Medicaid. They will tell you about income limits, etc.
Unless family is willing to step in, Medicaid is really the only other choice.
good luck
