We visited mom's family doctor yesterday and he gave a prescription for depression. He did not tell us how to help her dementia or what type she has. We know she has some form of dementia but we did not know there are many types. Who can we talk to to help us help mom?

I wasn't sure about the psychologist/psychiatrist route...in Canada that was who diagnosed my mom originally, but here in the States she sees a Neurologist which IMHO makes more sense. :)

Shannon's right. You need to speak with a neurologist and/or a gerontologist. Tests need to be performed, some psychological and some physical. Don't start with a psychiatrist, start with the neuro or gerontologist first. While dementia affects people mentally it's not a mental illness.

Your best bet is to get her into a Neurologist or I think Psychiatrist that specializes in this field.

They have special tests and do brain scans etc and can set you on a proper course.

Also contact an Elder Lawyer and get the Power of Attorney and Medical Power of Attorney put together if it isn't already which will allow for you or someone else in the family to take control of finances and medical decisions when she can not do it any longer.

Family Dr's are OK...but getting a specialist is IMHO essential as they know what they are looking for and how these things are best dealt with.

Hope that helps.
