Wondering if there are others who put there mom/parent in assisted living but it quickly turned to memory care and the resident population dramatically declined. My mom recognizes the rest of the residents in the locked area are way worse physically - she can dress and bathe herself and is mostly independent, just can’t remember things for a minute or two. She regularly asks me if she works there and is getting paid. She honestly thinks that. I’m wondering if a larger facility might have more people who aren’t in need of nursing support? My mom seems really unhappy and stressed. Want to figure out if I should look for larger facilities because more people might offer more variation in Alzheimer’s issues.

I don't know if a larger facility is the answer. I imagine that memory care is about the same everywhere. She must be at the high functioning end of the spectrum for being a candidate for MC. Do you think this was the right placement? Dementia can be tricky with them seeming fine one minute and maybe not so fine the next.

Have you talked to the person in charge of this unit? Tell them your concerns and see if there's any way to get your mom more engaged since she is a higher functioning patient?

Good luck.

Arrange to speak to the Facility Manager. Maybe Mom could be included in many of the AL activities? Hopefully they have a good range.. flower arranging, gardening, bingo, current affairs groups... to suit her interests & abilities. As most activities are structured & supervised they can be suitable for those with short term memory issues as well. Especially singing groups.

Is she in MC because she could leave the facility from an AL room, or is there another reason? If the only reason is because she’d be at risk of getting lost if she left the facility, then you might want to discuss that with the director and get her more involved with AL activities, or look for a more dementia focused AL, where access is monitored.
