Hi Clutterbugg and welcome to the forum. My short answer is yes, her not being the same after a stroke (even mini ones like my MIL suffered) is normal. Since a stroke affects the brain, things can be different than they were before. I am sorry. We have had to learn to relate to my MIL in new ways of conversation because her memory has been affected. I know that it may be a shock to the system to look at the woman that you have known all your life and to see that she is a different person. Stay open to learning new ways to talk with her and have a different closeness. It will come.

I would discuss with your mother's neurologist just what parts of the brain map are affected by her stoke. The truth is that some strokes change people's personality in a profound way. That you would not feel as close to her would be normal because you are sustaining the shock of a mother who is not the mother you "knew".
I don't know how long ago your Mom sustained this stroke. There is quite a lot of swelling in some areas of the brain that may decrease with time. Meanwhile your job is to educate yourself about behavior of stroke victims with online googling "behavior changes in stroke", and to provide what support you are able in the circumstances. Remember to take care of yourself and know that your reactions are normal and human.

Yes, strokes affect their ability to do things but I don’t understand why you feel differently about your mom now.
Are you having trouble being patient with her due to her inability to do things that she could easily do before?
