She has balance issues and falls once every so often. In my opinion they have their head in the sand....She has money to have care, but she's far from wealthy, but the family is holding onto it tightly...mom is 96 years old....her oldest son lives with her, but he works and comes and goes throughout the day...So afraid something will happen and it won't be good...sad situation....I'm just the daughter-in-law....what I think doesn't seem to matter....
I"m not sure they understand how difficult it is for a person that age to recover from a hip fracture, but it's very difficult. Or if they fracture their spine! It's very painful and takes a long time to heal. They are then confined to a wheelchair. Your mom doesn't understand all these things and apparently the siblings do not have proper judgment either, so I would make it my business to take care of this matter. If they aren't smart enough to do it, then I would figure a way to do it anyway. They could consent or deal with me in court over it. That's just me. To me, it's a no brainer.
I know this is hard to do, but it probably will take a serious fall before her 3 children have a wake-up call. The fact that she doesn't live alone is a positive as there is someone there on-off during the day.
Usually elders refuse to have any strangers in the house, wonder if that is why no one is there during the day when everyone is working. That stubborn streak is very hard to break.
