Mother has been in a nursing facility for 4 months. In the last month, she keeps telling us and staff that she is moving and starts packing up her belongings. Sometimes she feels she is not in her room even when we point out all her belongings in the room. At other times, she tells us she is being evicted. We have practiced compassionate validation of other hallucinations. Since she is packing up all her stuff everyday, we are not sure what approach to take now. Any suggestions?

My mother is doing the same thing. I am so sorry to hear it’s all very torturous. My mom has been in a nursing home for nine months six months she was in a rehab waiting for placement. She has no idea what’s going on. She’s packing her bags because she wants to go home that’s all it comes down to, the sad thing is is this could go on for years. If I could protest this whole system I would I’d like to be the leader to make all this needless suffering end….I’m sorry I wish I had an answer for you.

You are (or, ideally, your mother is?) probably paying outlandish $$$ for this facility, correct? So let this be something the staff deals with! It confounds me that people put their parents in expensive places, then get all up into issues they are paying others to solve. Back up, and let your mother pack up! Gives her something to do, if nothing else…

You can't reason with her because her brain is broken. You might as well stop trying.

Let her keep packing her stuff up! The problem is, I suppose, that someone has to unpack it so she can start all over again. There may be meds that could help her with anxiety, which this may be. Ask her doctor.

Such beliefs and rituals are very common. This is an outlet for her to pack and unpack, arrange and rearrange. I would not be overly concerned. Discuss with the staff. I think you will feel very reassured.
