My mother is in a nursing home in Ohio and I would like her to be transferred to Florida. My sister lives in Ohio, but has a hard time visiting often. How do I go about starting the process? I can transport her myself. She has Huntington Chorea and is steadily declining. She would be in a nursing home here too, but would have more family members visiting. She is on Medicaid.

tijones, as JoAnn had mentioned in her post, Medicaid doesn't go over State lines.

You will need to have your Mom qualify for Medicaid in Florida. Each State handles their own Medicaid funding, thus different rules and regulations. Have you checked out nursing homes in your area to see how often they have a Medicaid paid bed space?

It will be nice having more family who will visit.

As for traveling, hopefully others on the forum who have done this will chime in.

You and your sister should agree on this move. You should begin exploring the best places for your Mom once you understand what her assets are. You all, your Mom, your sister and you should be doing this together, and in agreement. The medicaid will become medical assistance in another state, so likely the process all over again. In California where I am it is called Medi-Cal. Not an easy process as you would likely be liquidating any property there. Who has POA for your Mom? Is it you? If your sister that would be less easy. So all in all a lengthy and not easy process. Starts with you and your sis working together, her there and you where you are to choose the best place. You are correct, the moving of your Mom herself will be the least of it. The most of it will be finding a facility that will take her on medical provided by Florida.

We are doing that right now, moving my step father and his wife from a home in AZ to one here in Fl. We started by doing our homework on local AL homes, we toured 15 and checked with the state to view their rating and complaints. We have found the right place and they are flying her next Sunday, we have lined up service to escort them to the airport and turn them over to airport personal, we will do the same here and pick them up.
