She has accused my husband and I plotting against her, trying to make it seem like she’s losing her mind and trying to giving her a heart attack. She has no short term memory. She’ll watch a tv show but when asked what’s happening she has no idea. I’ve asked her doctor if she’s in beginning stage of dementia and he said no. But when asked who I was she told him but few minutes later said she doesn’t know me. I’m confused!

Second FreqFlyer's suggestion:  UTI was my first thought.

OTOH, who among us doesn't change moods periodically?  I often get that way when I'm hounded by "flippers" who pester me to show them Dad's house, or want to know when I'm going to sell.   And the robocalls put me in a bad mood as well.

These are troubling and stressful times; I think mood stability is challenged if anyone follows the news.

TNtechie, you're a good sleuth!  You've definitely earned a Sherlock Holmes hat!!

Has your mother's PCP administered a cognizance test such as a MOCA or SLUMS to her? If not, how can he say she's not exhibiting all the signs of dementia?? Sure sounds like dementia to me, especially since you say she doesn't have UTIs. Get her to a neurologist or insist the PCP give her a cognizance exam so you can get a proper diagnosis of what's going on!!!

Good luck!

Thank you for the info on test. Even my brothers who talk with her every day long distance asked me if I thought she had dementia. It made me feel like if they could tell over the phone I wasn’t imagining it.

My mother becomes out of character aggressive when she's slightly dehydrated. It took me a while to figure out what the trigger was for her behavior. You might try some journaling/calendaring to help you see if there is some pattern to when these episodes occur.

She drinks 16 ounces of water every hour. From the time she gets up to bed time. She’s always been a water drinker.

Her doctor meaning a PCP? If so, you need to try a neurologist. They will give her tests that a PCP normally doesn't.

Rcbvrlh, have your Mom checked for an Urinary Tract Infection. Her primary doctor can do this in-house or go to an Urgent Care. Such an infection can cause all types of symptoms in seniors, even mimicking dementia, paranoia, angry outbursts, etc. The infection can be treated with antibiotics.

She was checked for UTI. It’s done every doctor visit. Doesn’t have one.
