My mom has sores on her legs and I have had the nurse at the ALF look at it. She has bandaged them, worked with the doctor and has wound care coming in. My problem is that my mom pulls the bandages off after they leave. I go to visit every day and find them removed and a small Band-Aid on the sore (that she puts on). Any suggestions on how to persuade her to leave the bandages on?

Msblcb: You have a separate thread dated October 8, 2022 on this same issue about your mother having edema of her legs. Perhaps something else is going on as she is removing the bandages. Seek physician advice.

A different type of bandage might help. Maybe it doesn't feel comfortable and that's why she pulls them off. If you can ask her about it, maybe she can tell you in her own words what the problem is. If she's replacing them with her own Band-Aid, she should be able to articulate to you why she switches them.

A Geriatric Psychiatrist can offer medications that will help her live longer through calm and serene acceptance of what she is facing and what it takes to survive.

I wonder if the sores are itchy or uncomfortable. Maybe relieving pain or itch would help avoid focus on the sores. Can your mother wear light weight knee highs over the bandages, or pants with elastic at the ankles, just to prevent tearing off the bandages? Talk to the nurse and ask advice.

You can buy a pull on wrap similar to an ace wrap but one piece. Be sure to measure the leg where the sores are so the wrap is not too constricting.

Ask the nurse to put these on after the wound change.

Not sure if your mom needs help dressing but how about leggings to cover the bandages?

She is very sensitive to tight clothing. She has absolutely refused to use compression stockings. I think she perceived the bandages as too tight (or very different than "her"
norm). I will definitely look into the wraps. She seems a little anxious right now. We are also having problems with her taking her medication. Both of these behaviors are not normal for her. So, something else may be going on. Thank you for the helpful advice.

There are covers that can be put over a bandage so that is it more difficult to remove.
Try having them put socks on her, knee high or thigh high if needed.
there is a wrap that I get that is usually used for wrapping animal injuries. It is sometimes known as "Vet Wrap". It is not an adhesive but the wrap sticks to it's self.
The other option if the sores are not deep is to use a "liquid bandage" this comes in spray or one that has a little brush. It does an amazing job of covering, closing skin. I used it a LOT to help prevent a bruise from becoming a skin tear on my Husband.
Another suggestion might be to put gloves on mom so that she does not have the dexterity to remove a bandage.
And..
If the wound does not really need to be covered by a bandage maybe just leaving it alone might allow it to heal if she is not picking at it.
Obviously if it is a deep sore or weeping it should be covered or if it is in a location where it might easily become contaminated it needs to be covered.

Thank you. I think the nurse was concerned about sepsis. The wound does look better. I think it is from her picking dry skin. So, I have been rubbing her legs with vitamin e oil and that has helped. I will ask if the liquid can be used for this type of wound, I certainly hope so. Thank you so much for the ideas! Have a blessed day!
