Hello everyone. Mom continues to deteriorate as this da*n dementia steals more of her short and now long-term memory, her cognitive skills, her mobility, her dignity. She is no longer the woman she was even as recently as a year ago and I just grieve for her, and her children. Anyway, she cannot take care of a pet. Has anyone ever bought a doll, or an animatronic cat or dog for a parent with dementia? Strange question I know, but we are trying to find ways to to relieve her nearly constant anxiety. Thanks. Hugs to your loved ones.

My mom had a baby doll and a robot lap cat . The cat would respond to petting by purring and moving head , meows, blinked eyes . Mom even named her robot cat my Dad’s middle name . Idk why .
My mother’s AL would allow kittens from a shelter to visit . My mother loved the real kittens too.

They work just as well as a newborn baby doll

I got my mom an animatronic cat from Amazon that looked like her real kitty that couldn’t come from assisted living side to the memory care side with her. I just put the ‘cat’ in a cat bed across the room and said nothing about it. It would move and blink now and then, and react if touched or petted. Within days it was real to her, and a great comfort, though she worried it wasn’t eating. I left it there when she passed away and it was immediately adopted by another resident. Pricy but well worth it.

if you walk into ANY memory care facility you will find lots of women carrying around and caring for their baby dolls. It's actually quite precious to witness.
And I can only imagine that an animatronic cat or dog would bring just as much comfort too, as they are so very life like.

Several women at my mom's nursing home enjoyed cuddling with their "pets" and caring for their "babies", there was a period of time when my mom lived with me that she seemed to get comfort from a plain old teddy bear, the only way to know whether your mom will too is to try.
