My husband passed away after a long illness, leaving me financially ruined. All I have is my Social Security and a few clients that bring in enough to barely cover my living expenses. Any suggestion on how to obtain benefits or increase work from home to stay independent, I am 70 and have Multiple Sclerosis so my options are few. Thanks

Get a social security disability determination form from your dr, apply for Medicaid, open a pooled trust account to protect the spend down.

All really good suggestions, I will work on everything. I knew about some but didn't move on them - it is good to have support. Thanks....

Is there low income senior housing in your area? Rent is typically based upon income to make it affordable. AND, sometimes the apt complex has a social worker on hand that will set residents up with other services.

I would check with your county's Dept of Social Services or other agency that screens for benefits. I'm not familiar with how that works in your state, but in NC one department screens to see if you qualify for Federal, State and county programs. Also, if your condition warrants, would you qualify for Assisted Living?

I hope you find something. Please let us know how it turns out.

If you or your husband were veterans you may want to contact VA to see if you qualify for any benefits. Contact Elder Services in your area for any programs that may be available and because of your MS you may qualify for SSI. Best of luck.

Nocouch, here we have places called "care homes" that only have 3=5 residents who all have thier own room and some privacy. Some are set up as AL type places. The rents are lower, the place is a private home, but meals and such are provided. Maybe look into this.. you could still do your work, but get help with meals and liveing activities at a lower price than a tradional AL

Unfortunately I am in a studio ( for now) but there is no room - good suggestion - thanks. When the lease is up I may try to rent a room - from someone, it would give me some interaction at least.

What are your living arrangements like Nocouch, would it be possible to take in a boarder or room mate to split expenses?
