My dad will get angry and lash out at people physically. Kind of gets a wild look in his eye when it happens. Then once he gets settled back down, there is like a blank stare, trancelike wave that comes over him. I will ask him about the behavior and he doesn't recall it happening, or is he just in denial??
I don't have personal experience but I have read that some medications are dangerous depending on what kind of dementia. Has the doctor actually tested and dx what type of dementia?
Sometimes we just have to let what the caregivers are telling us to roll off our backs and let them do what they get paid for. I know it is hard but you can't let it consume you completely. I am learning that I will have plenty to worry about as things happen, so deep breath and pray that nothing tragic happens today.
If the AL is saying that they can't manage him, as is, it may be time for a different level of care.
Hugs for all you do!
What does his doctor say about it?
Is this new behavior or was he an aggressive personality before dementia?
I would video him during an episode and get his doctor informed and on board with a plan. God forbid he strikes out and seriously injures someone.
If he lives with you, I would start keeping a journal on everything he eats, drinks, watches on TV, listens to on radio, medication, visitors, just everything and see if you can determine if anything is a trigger for these outbursts.
Getting him checked for UTI is a good idea, those buggers are just brutal in seniors and manifest in truly terrifying symptoms.
Let us know how you figure it out and what you find. This is information that would be so beneficial for lots of us.
Hugs 4 all u do!
