My Mom is deteriorating quickly. She can't remember what happened 10 minutes ago. She still knows who I am, most of the time but friends who stop by at least weekly, she does not know. Any change in her routine causes her symptoms to become much worse. She is getting up at night thinking it is morning and eating breakfast but does not remember it come morning. I would like to know the stages of vascular dementia so I know where she is and what is coming next. Thanks.
Vascular dementia doesn't necessarily follow the same timeline as Alzheimer's but the progression is relatable. There are also different types of vascular disease that have different outcomes, dementia brought on by a stroke differs from multi infarct dementia which differs from dementia associated with other vascular conditions that interfere with blood flow to the brain like diabetes, heart failure or ultra low blood pressure. In general if the underlying condition can be successfully treated then progression will be much slower than if it can not.
I appreciate your response. Have a good day
