Mother has been bedridden for 5 mos and has been in a hospital bed the entire time. She does not reposition herself, so I have foam wedges I use from time to time to keep her off her backside. The sores are primarily on her buttocks. The hospice nurse is aware, but so far have taken no action to help.

She needs to be kept completely off the ulcerated areas until they heal, and since she can't shift herself you have to be the one doing it for her every couple of hours - it doesn't have to be a major change just a readjustment of the areas in contact with the bed. They should be offering specialized wound care as well as an alternating pressure mattress pad.

I second what Barb said. We had a home health nurse who treated mom’s pressure sores with ointments. This particular nurse had experience in treating wounds.

She also told me to buy a specific pillow for my mom when she sat for long periods in her recliner.

Please ask the hospice nurse to order an alternating air pressure mattress.

I am surprised this has not been done as a preventative measure.

Ask for a wound care specialist to come out to evaluate the bedsores she has and get a treatment plan started.
