Assisted Living is apartment living for fairly independent seniors who need no care, little care or moderate care and includes activities, a mini bus to take them to events and shopping, a small kitchenette in their apartments (but no stove), and happy hour on Friday night with musical entertainment, etc. A nursing home is for an ill senior who requires a much higher level of care from a nursing staff 24/7 and may need 2 people to lift him up or a hoyer mechanical lift in some cases. Wheelchair bound residents can be wheeled directly into the shower in a nursing home and they can get their foods pureed and fed to them by the staff.
There is nothing in between AL and Skilled Nursing that I know of. There are ALs out there that do provide more care than the standard AL, however, for those residents that don't want Skilled Nursing but are a two-person assist, for instance. Morningstar is one of those chains of ALs that provide a higher level of care than most, at a cost, naturally.
