Mom has dementia but is a very calm person. She is trading habits, first she was sniffing repeatedly for several months. She finally stopped doing that, however she is making a constant sound with her mouth. As if she is trying to blow bubbles with her mouth. She is up all hours of the night and morning . And it’s keeping her from sleeping. And me too.

I can not begin to explain the noises my Husband made.
He would moan but there was a variety of "moans"
We were in a store and I heard a little girl ask her mom.."why is that man so sad".. I saw her mom kinda tug on her arm as if to quiet her. I stopped and said to the girl "he is not sad. He makes those noises to comfort himself. Do you have friends in school that have autism?" When she replied yes I asked if they made noises or rocked back and forth. When she said yes. I explained to her that her friends brains do not work as well as her brain and they did these things to comfort themselves. I said "My Husband has a brain that does not work as well so he makes noises just like your friends. So don't worry he is not sad. Thank you for caring".
Noises are common. It can be used to relieve anxiety.
You learn to "tune it out", you wear headphones, earbuds, ear plugs. Anything that will "dull or quiet" the sound. You do not want to use noise cancelling headphones because you would not hear a change in the sound that might indicate trouble. Or you would not hear a fire alarm, carbon monoxide alarm.
If the noises your mom makes are due to anxiety that might be what you want to take care of. There are medications it might take a bit to find the correct medication and the right dose.

The other concern is if she is wandering late at night or early and the rest of the household is sleeping is there a possibility that she could get out of the house and wander off?

My husband makes lots of mouth noises too. He can even make them while he is talking, I just don't get it. And it sure is annoying! My son (that lives here) says as soon as his father starts with the mouth noise, he's out of the room because it puts him on edge. I don't have the luxury of exiting stage left. And honestly, I haven't found anything to make it stop. I hope someone else here has some suggestions.

I'm sitting in the ER with my mother again and in between her asking me if we can leave, she's making chuffing/blowing/snoring noises out of her mouth while fully awake.😣 We're here because she was complaining of chest pain to the nurse at the Memory Care AL and then to the EMT who picked her up in the ambulance. By the time she got to the ER, she said she never had any pain and they'd left her alone in the activity room to watch a movie! Her EKG is fine, of course, but we'll be here till midnight with her making these horrid noises and screaming WHAT at me every time I answer her questions about why we can't leave. Then she accuses me of yelling. I'm getting ready to go sit on the toilet just to get OUT of this room for a while.
Trying to make demented elders "stop" doing things is truly an exercise in futility.
