My mom is 90 and needs 24 hour assistance in my home. I am asking if she , as a veterans widow is she entitled to home care benefits, such as a person to sit with her when I need to shop or have a medical appointment for myself. She is in a wheelchair but can stand for short periods of time.

Find Care & Housing
I just went through this with my Mom, who is a widow of my Dad who was a WW2 vet. Go to the local VA office,or call and they will tell you what you need to do. My Mom is eligible to receive up to 1300.00 for care either in a nursing/assisted living, or for personal caretakers - which can be a family member. BUT! according to the VA office he must have been a veteran of a war...

Yes she is entitled if her Veteran Spouse qualified for Aid & Attendance. You can go to your local Veteran Commission Office to apply. You will need his DD214 Discharge Papers, physicia. Order stating you need home care services that includes the qualifying diagnosis and proof of marriage and also proof of income. Also take all medical expenses they are deductible to help you financially qualify, even all your old past due medical bills.

Go up to the Money and Legal tab and click on Veterans Assistance. If mom's doctor will certify her need for two or more ADL's (activities of daily living) she can qualify if her assets are limited. You need to find her husband's discharge papers, their marriage certificate and five years of financial records.

Gypsy, you might want to check out this consolidation of posts on veterans' issues. It's possible someone else has asked the same question, although a widow's eligibility also depends on her deceased husband's eligibility. There are a lot of factors that the VA would have to consider.

Checking the VA website is also a good resource, because questions such as a widow's eligibility vary by different classifications of veterans and those classification levels are often key to the question you posed.

You can also research to determine if your local county has a veterans' assistance department that can help with your search for assistance. If not, contact a local service organization such as the VFW or American Legion and ask which of their local organizations help veterans and their families qualify for benefits.

Good luck with your search.
