He has no life or burial ins. He was admitted to a nursing home last year because the doctors deemed him not safe to live independently. He is currently on Medicaid and Medicare. I am concerned that if he passes suddenly the cost of funeral arrangements would be impossible to meet.

@txcamper: Thank you for that helpful and compassionate answer. My father was not in my life until he got this diagnosis last year; therefore I have not been privy to his financial planning. He has no assets or insurance so I know the responsibility of these services will fall to me. It is a bit overwhelming but something that I wanted to get out in front of.

I will say this in advance, that I do not know anything about pre-paid funeral plans and how they work. But, my in-laws did that, and while there are a few expenses still owed at the time of burial, that might be an option for you. Expenses still owed included: flowers, opening and closing of the grave, obituary, thank you cards, certified copies of the death certificate, officiants, the guest book, limos, that sort of thing.

Unfortunately, 76 is young, anymore. He may live 10 years. Perhaps you could begin to pay for it, now. Then, medicaid can't touch that money.

I suggest that instead of trying to find a life insurance or burial policy, you save the money you'd spend on a policy and plan to spend it on the funeral.

Is there a legal burial policy that I could purchase?

NO you cannot, certain medical conditions preclude writing a policy.
