I am my dh's caregiver. I can manage everything except his shower. I think the solution would be a sliding tub transfer bench to get him in and out of the tub. A good one costs $300 or $400. I had a wonderful CNA until a couple of weeks ago when she had health problems and has to take some time off. So right now I'm using sudsing bath sponges to wash him but he really needs a shower at least once a week.

Go to your insurance website. You want durable equipment. You also should be getting a benefit book every year for what is covered. When I worked Medicare did not cover shower chairs. One of the things that left the loan closet alot. I just looked online and I saw them for under $200.

Ask DHs doctor to write a prescription for this item, and then call your insurance co. Standard Medicare pays for one medical appliance every 5 years which is usually a walker or wheelchair.

I would go to the equipment stores that sell this specialized item to check this, and then I would call Medicare advantage plan you are a part of. I don't know if you have incoming help through your insurance or private pay? If through the insurance ask your aid when you get another to point you to where to apply for specialized equipment.
I seriously doubt the Medicare system will pay for such a specialized and expensive piece of equipment simply because it would bankrupt the system supplying such things, but then they supply VERY costly drugs, so who knows.

This is basically for you to research unless someone here happens to know the answer, and I hope that's the case. It's so difficult to figure out just who to call, and to get an answer when you DO find out. So I wish you best of luck.

Good advise PeggySue but I called them twice last Monday. Hang up both times when they tried to transfer the call to appropriate person. Ah, well. I'll keep trying. I can afford the equipment myself but there are so many new expenses now with my DHs condition. I try to save where I can.
