My sis is 88 and is in stage 7/a on the FAST rating scale. Many meds have been tried unsuccessfully to help her sleep. She will chant/scream for hours at night and there seems to be nothing family can do. Tried keeping her up as much as possible in the day, various activities non of which work. music etc. Any suggestions?

So sorry about your sister. This must be very stressful for you. Not sure if you could have your sister's Neurologist admit her into Skilled Nursing and Rehab with a Psyciatric Department or Memory Care. She needs strong antipsychotic medicine at her stay and therapy to get her mentally stable. Medicine to calm her down may take time a few weeks to kick in.

There has to be something that can help. Keep looking for the right Doctor and the right medication. Good luck

I know you say many meds have been tried without success. But at the right dosage, sedating meds can calm a rampaging tiger or elephant. They can work for your sister also. Tell the dr he needs to keep trying. Maybe play the dr a recording and show him a log.

What worked for my dad was a combination of an antipsychotic and Trazodone. Dosages were changed as needed when his behaviors got worse.

I agree with the suggestion of hospice also. They will give you emergency meds that can be added on top of regular prescriptions including anti anxiety meds and morphine and I know they can work wonders.

Good luck! It sounds intolerable to me.

When Mom started humming, it was caused by anxiety. Meds stopped the humming.

Has she seen a geriatric psychiatrist for a consultation? Your sister needs a calming medication that will knock her out so she can rest. Is hospice on board? If not, they should be. Hospice has many meds in their kit that are stronger and more effective to help your poor sister at this stage in her disease.

I'm sorry you're going through this, it's not easy for you either. Best of luck.

Have you thought about placing her in a memory care facility where they are better able to help your sister, and her family can get their sleep?
