Prohibitive costs necessitates moving into more affordable AL unit, but he is refusing to transfer. Mini mental status exam has not changed over this past year. How to prove he has no insight? How to show where he is cognitively. IL refuses to allow mobility scooter use, due to Physical therapist stating cognitive impairment. He goes out on busy road to visit bank & pharmacy. IL will not allow him to use facility’s bus without an aide to accompany him, due to leg weakness. His PCP says there is no dementia. How to get a psych evaluation to assess his cognitive status? Where do I begin?

I am afraid you are too late for ALF. This would require mental capacity and you have a medical team telling you he doesn't have that. He would also have to be somewhat independent and he isn't. So you would be looking at memory care, and again, a cost of approximately 20,000 a month on average dependent on where he lives and what's available.

He already has a medical team working with him.
Discuss ways to get him to evaluation with them.
The next hospitalization of any kind (which is on the horizon given his mobility issues) is the best and easiest was to call in the social workers and to get evaluation by neuro-psyc on the books.

You begin by letting us know if you are his PoA. Does he have one? If you are not his PoA then you specifically have no power in this situation.

If he has a PoA this person needs to be informed of what you know and asked to now step in to try to manage it in his best interests.

I don't know what to tell you if his doctor says he has no impairment. Doctors and banks are very cautious when close family members start referencing the elder's money and financial affairs as "proof".

Even if you are his active PoA, you cannot force an uncooperative adult to do something against their will without a boatload of drama and exhaustion. Dementia robs people of their logic and reason and empathy. You can ask him what his plan is when he runs out of money in his current situation and see what he says. You may have to wait for "an event" that will force the move.
