My mother is 92 with moderate/severe Lewy Body Dementia. This past week she seems to have slipped into a constant state of hallucinations. Previously she has been conversing with a 3 year old who sings to her and would come in and out of this delusional state throughout the course of the day. It is now nonstop and mom seems to have taken on the responsibility of a full time grandmother. She talks to the furniture and will get down on her hands and knees to talk to this child and her family who she thinks is living in the basement. She is totally convinced this is real and will even draw my dad and ourselves (sister and I) into her fantasy world. We don't argue (because it's futile and will only aggravate her) and go along with the charade. Fast forward.....convinced her to see her Primary yesterday and he prescribed Seroquel pending the results of a UTI. She's had emotional and mental issues all her adult life. I know what to look for as far as side effects are concerned, but it would be helpful to know if anyone here has had some experience on a personal level. I understand this is a potent drug. He didn't advise her going to the hospital since it's understaffed and the psych ward leaves much to be desired. Memory Care is not on the table at this juncture, although this has been recommended several times.

I take Seroquel for sleep also. The dosing range is VERY different. From 25 mgs to 800mgs per day. For me, 50 mgs helps me to fall asleep and go back to sleep when I wake up during the night.

Antipsychotics like Seroquel are usually avoided in the elderly because of serious side effects, including cerebro-vascular accidents. Strong psychotropic medications can make dementia worse and other than sedating the patient it won't help the dementia. UTI is known to make even normal old people delirious or temporarily psychotic. Perhaps they were using Seroquel as an emergency drug to calm her down.
