My dad is doing odd things like shaving with his electirc razor for an hour, two time per day, leaving water running, and other repeticious things. I'm worried that these may be signs of dementia or Alzheimer's. Has anyone experienced this?

He easily could have the beginning of vascular dementia with his cardiac issues. He needs to be tested for that and for any infections or other problems. Can you get him to his doctor and tell the doctor what is going in and get your dad a thorough evaluation?

If he has heart problems he may not have been getting enough oxygen and nutrients to his brain. Many people with vascular problems will show signs of dementia because of the effect on the brain. Sometimes the effects are temporary, but other times they are permanent if brain damage has occurred. Talk with the doctor about it to see if there is anything that will help. What you're describing does sound a lot like dementia. People can lose track of time. An hour can be like 5 minutes to them. They can forget they've already done something. I hope you can find some way to help him.

sbjet64, have your Dad tested for an urinary tract infection [UTI] as that can sometimes mimic dementia. The test is very easy, and antibiotics are used to get rid of the infection.
