Hmmm...you've got me to thinking.

Maybe antibiotics. First one released on the market in 1911 according to Wiki. It sounds like you have the answer. Hope you'll share.

Mudvier, people still develop illnesses even though there are cures for such illnesses, therefore the drug company still needs to produce said medicine.

And it can takes years for a drug company to break, and start seeing a profit, even from finding such cures, as it takes decades of trial and error with research and development.

I know that herbal "remedies" and natural aides are very popular. For example, I know some people swear by coconut oil to help their loved one's Alzheimer's. And I don't think there's anything wrong in believing that but I believe that if coconut oil actually helped the drug companies would find a way to market it and sell it. Same with other 'natural remedies'.

But if people think that something they're taking that is natural is actually helping more power to them. Medical history is full of clinical trials where people received a placebo and swore that they felt better just because it was suggested that they might feel better.

Muddy, read the posts by Captain. He just went through hepC treatment with a new drug that has a 90% cure rate. That is pretty darn impressive. Google "Sofosbuvir".

In my educated-the-hard-way opinion - NO! It's all about the money and only about the money. Pump billions into charity to find a cure for anything and the researchers get wealthy. Diabetes, cancer, ALZ, dementia, childhood illness, crones, colitis, birth defects and the list goes on and on. Every once and a while they throw us a bone but NO cure. The days of vaccines for polio are gone and have been replaced by the ever expanding search for the all consuming dollar.
They will reap what they sow but for now we suffer in this world.

my ? was are Rx companies slowing research for cures opting for research that will bring more profitable drug which are a long term solutions and to generate more sales for Rx drugs to treat the side effects of the original drug.

So we a cure for Viral Hepatitis the drug ABT-450/r (A friend of mine died with HVC just two years ago, (Diane)had hoped to retire this year. She loved to sail and planed to find a nice boat w/ motor and retire.) Thanks for the information!

I doubt a Rx company would slow research because once they come upon a cure that has been proven through drug trials, the company stock would go sky high.

Plus a lot of newer medicine is now being used for other illnesses besides the one that the drug was intended to cure.

The U.S. is slow to *approve* new drugs compared to drugs offered in Europe.
