My dad is constantly hallucinating. he sees things that aren't there, he speaks to people that are not there, he speaks of the US Navy ship that he served in WWII as if he were still on the bunker hill air craft carrier. he sees the wood floor in living room flood full of water every night and the blown up ship floats by. he sees six foot spiders come out of the recessed lighting in his house, and many many other things. the doctor put him on a medication that helped get rid of a lot of the hallucinatio but the hospital recently took him off it saying it was dangerous to be on it for a length of time. dad is 92. this is an almost daily thing of him seeing things. they say he has vascular dementia and Alzheimer's.
does any one deal with this issue. I would love to hear from you if you do. I use to argue with him about it not being there but now I have learned to go with the flow. step on the spiders, mop up the floor etc etc

Does the doctor who took him off the medication know anything at all about dementia? What is the danger of being on it too long?

Your dad is 92 years old and has a terminal disease. I would personally give more weight to making his life comfortable in the present than to preventing something from happening in the future.

Discuss this with his primary care doctor or the doctor who is treating his dementia.

Yes, many individuals with demensia hallucinate. My mom talks to hers. If they are not causing stress, just go with the flow. I agree with Jeanne, what is the harm of long term use when they have a terminal illness. Comfort and quality of life is more important than extending life.
